MUNICIPALITY

ABOUT US

Although Ingwe Municipality is located in what many may call ‘The Backwoods’ of KwaZulu Natal, as far as technological advancement is concerned, we are as relevant as those municipalities that are located in bigger towns and cities.

In the early 1800s the Thembu tribe lived in this area, they were ruled over by their king, Inkosi King Cekwana, which means 'Little adviser.' In 1822, a Zulu regiment of Mchunus attacked the peaceful, prosperous Thembus and in spite of the fact that the remnants of the tribe took refuge in the forest of Hlabeni Hill (The Place of the Staging), slaughtered all but one woman, three children and few men. With the Mchunus came A small band of Mkhizes, in charge of making spears for the regiment. In 1823, Shaka dispatched a regiment slowly returned to the district and settled down to their former peaceful life. History records that Shaka`s powerful young warriors were totally defeated, not in combat, but a severe blizzard.
